Sore Teeth
It is perfectly normal for your teeth to become sore 4 to 8 hours after braces are put on and for this discomfort to last for several days. Mild painkillers such as Paracetamol will relieve this discomfort. A soft diet is also advisable.
Sore Lips / Cheeks
Some irritation to lips and cheeks is likely to occur in the initial stages of Orthodontic Treatment. If an area is troubling you, please place the wax we provide you on the braces next to the irritated area. Wax can also be placed over the end of the archwires if they move around and become longer on one side.
Warm Salty water (a teaspoon of table salt to a glass of warm water) makes an excellent mouthrinse that accelerates the healing of ulcers.
If you play a musical instrument let us know – we can order you in a soft guard to cover the braces. Breakages
If a bracket or metal band comes loose do not remove it unless it is causing irritation -please contact Centenary Orthodontics as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. Remember the dietary guidelines to avoid this happening. In the early stages of treatment the wires we place are light and flexible. If you bite out one of these towards the back of the mouth – try to tuck the wire (using tweezers) back into the molar tube it came out of or under the hook on the side of the tube. Wax can be used to secure the wire against the tube.
