1. How long will Orthodontic treatment take?
The length of treatment depends upon the severity of the problem. Your orthodontist will give you an estimate of the treatment time.
2. How much does the treatment cost?
The cost of treatment will vary according to whether one or both arches of teeth need treatment; how severe the problem is and the type of appliance required. A detailed quotation is given at the treatment plan visit. The cost can be spread out over the course of treatment to make payment easier.
3. How often do I need to have my braces adjusted?
Adjustment visits, once braces are in place, are short appointments that occur 3 to 8 weeks apart.
4. Will I need to have teeth removed?
In some cases teeth may need to be removed, in order to make enough room to fit crowded or protruded teeth into position. Fortunately, modern Orthodontics involves a much lower requirement to remove teeth, and, if treated at the correct age, teeth may only need to be removed in a minority of cases.
5. Do braces hurt?
The majority of patients experience some temporary discomfort. This pain occurs a few hours after their braces are first fitted and disappears usually after a few days. Discomfort also sometimes occurs after adjustment appointments. Pain relief is possible using mild non-drowsy pain relievers. Everyone's pain experience varies and is an individual response.
6. Will I still be able to talk when I have braces?
Yes, braces on the front of your teeth should not affect how you talk or the sound of your voice. In certain cases, you may require a removable appliance and you may then experience slight difficulty talking clearly for a day or two or until your tongue adjusts to the appliance.
7. Will braces cause ulcers in my mouth?
When you first get braces, you could experience some ulcers in your mouth due to irritation. If you rinse with warm salty water several times a day, they will usually heal within a week. We provide orthodontic wax to our patients when they get braces as this helps protect the inside of your lips and cheeks from rubbing against the brackets, which in turn helps prevent ulcers forming. Your soft tissues will become accustomed to the braces and after a while you shouldn't need to use wax anymore. If you suffer from ulcers prior to getting braces we can recommend treatments to combat them especially whilst having orthodontic treatment. 8. Does it hurt to eat with braces?
For a few days after the braces go on and after some adjustment appointments your teeth will feel a little tender and you may wish to eat softer foods. After this you should be able to eat normally again. 9. Is there anything I can't eat?
You can eat most of the good things that you eat now, however hard, sticky or crunchy foods should be avoided because they may stick to the brackets and pull them off your teeth. Breakages will extend your treatment time. In addition, the sugar can get around behind the braces and cause decay.
Foods which should be avoided include;
• Lollies including Toffees
• Cola soft drinks
• Ice
• Hard crusty bread
• Whole apples or raw carrots (cut into pieces first or grate)
• Corn on the cob (cut the corn off the cob before eating) Plain soft chocolates and ice cream are fine as long as you brush afterwards.
10. What happens if a bracket falls off?
We will simply re-attach it. Usually this is not a problem; however, if this does occur please make an appointment with us as soon as possible.

11. What about my wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth usually start to erupt in your late teens and early twenties. Anecdotally people will often tell you their wisdom teeth caused their front teeth to move at this time in their lives. Some people who don’t have wisdom teeth also experience tooth movement at this stage of their lives. The regular wearing of retainers will minimize undesirable tooth movement . Wisdom teeth should be removed if they are impacted and likely to cause problems including resorption of adjacent teeth if left in place. An xray is required to determine if your wisdom need removal.
