Why do I need orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontist in Brisbane providing treatment for overcrowded teeth, spacing, impacted teeth, cross bites and narrow arches, protruding or retrusive teeth and overbites.

Malocclusion is the official name given to orthodontic problems and essentially means a “bad bite”. Some Malocclusions are inherited and some can be acquired.

Inherited Malocclusions include tooth and jaw size discrepancies.

Acquired Malocclusions – we are not born with but may be caused by early or late loss of baby teeth, or sucking of the thumb or fingers for a prolonged period of time. Some malocclusions are associated with chronic nasal obstruction due to allergies or large adenoids or narrow airways. If your child is a mouth breather (with chronic nasal airway obstruction), talk to your doctor about improving your child’s ability to breathe through their nose. This creates an optimal environment for the developing dentition.

Most Malocclusions may be fixed through Orthodontic Treatment including: Crowding, Spacing, Impacted Teeth, Cross Bites and Narrow Arches, Protruding or Retrusive Teeth and Overbites.

Untreated Orthodontic problems can worsen over time. Orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function and excessive stress and trauma on the gum tissue that supports the teeth.

Treating Orthodontics problems early may reduce the need for the restorative dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.

Orthodontic Treatment can be beneficial to both adults and children alike.
